Professional Experience/Vacation

If one asking me my professional experience, I think I should start one or two years of my last study in ITB in 1996-1997. At that time, my teacher is telling me to design and prototype and small switching device as topic on my dissertation. So I read available book and manual of the tool, then I design, prototype and test, and finally write the documentation, present it for 3 teacher. Unfortunately, the teacher question, in my opinion, is out of the topic. I did dissapointed but fortunately I write a very good documentation, so finally I got A for the dissertation.

After graduation, which is not a long time after the dissertation presentation, I call the HRD of NEC Nusantara Communications to ask whether they willing to accept me to work there. The HRD forward my question to the user which is Mr. Utang Bahrudin (Alm/RIP) the manager of Technical Assistance and Service Center. Finally I accepted and start to work on November 4, 1996 as TASC Engineer.

As TASC Engineer, I did a lot of thing but mostly is to read/learn about NEAX switching system, to provide assistance to customer (which is Telkom PSTN staff) and do trouble shooting on NEAX PSTN. Beside, we did testing and software configuration. During this work, I spent a lot of time visiting Telkom site : One Remote Switching Unit in Cigudeg which is always striken by lightning, Election Day standby in Bogor, Trouble shooting in Palangkaraya, Installation in Jambi, Palembang and Lampung.

On Sept 1999, I accepted to work for Motorola Projects worldwide, and as a start time, it was 2 week training at motorola training facility at mendelein, Il, USA. After that, I work for 2 and 1/2 month on BTS maintenance. Totally I work for 21 month in the USA doing BTS commissioning and Integration, CBSC software upgrade and CBSC installation. I visiting a lot of city and rural area during this job : Chicago, Richmond, Cleveland, Phoenix, Seatle, Sacramento, San Diego and it's sub-urban and rural area. It should mention that I visited rural area in Chicago, Richmond, Cleveland becase I did Bts commissioning/integration on that area. I also had the opportunity to visit Niagara Water Falls near Buffalo, NY, Grand Canyon, Disney Los Angeles, 6 flag north of Chicago, Sea World in San Diego, Las Vegas, Nevada, White House and Capitol Building at Washington, DC, and many more.

Finished work in USA, I work in Thailand to do BTS site audit, BTS commissioning, BTS integration, BTS trouble shooting. I spend most of the time in travelling and at site. It's a lot of site visiting like working on some one house rooftop, inside shelter in the wood or paddy field. In these time we had opportunity to visit Chiang Mai, Cambodia border, Pattaya, Rayong, Sun Flower, and a lot of thai food of course.

Next is to back to Indonesia to work on Telkom Flexi Initial project in Medan. I work on project management : site installation audit, commissioning, integration, atp and maintenance.

After that, I work for Tata Teleservices in India for four months : three months in ahmedabad is work on cbsc deployment, power up, commissioning and integration. after that is one month work in Pune near Mumbai on Operation Maintenance Support for their CDMA network.

After work in India, I back to Indonesia to do Project Management and Opearation Management of Telkom Flexi Project in Palembang. My works is on rollout project management. Started on 2005, I work mainly on Operation Management of Telkom Flexi CDMA2000-1X for Motorola. My work objective is to provide operation support for Telkom and keep it's performance at best. This including performance monitoring and performance analysis, optimization and drive test, rehoming, carrier upgrade, software upgrade, workshop and training, trouble shooting, and consultancy to customer.

On this last work, I do a lot of job, but the main focus is to minimize down time, minimize drop call and to minimize call setup failure, maximize coverage, optimize the quality and capacity. I use a lot of skill, knowledge and tools : Falcon, SQL, unix and perl scripts, networking and server skill, and many more.

During Idul Fitri Holiday We went to Sukabumi for visiting my parents. On the second day we went to Selabintana park to have a picnic-lunch together with my mother, my brother with his wife and kid, our helper, my mother helper, and of course my wife and two lovely kids.
Here is the picture :

Build Fish Pond

My home is having concrete installed with hollow with size around 2x1 meters, but filled with stones, so I got an idea to remove the whole stone, leave it empty, clean it up, fill with water and then put some small fish on it. The result we have a pond with fish, but it doesn't look good, and even it look dirty. So I went to the grocery and buy some tiny stones and spread it. Little bit better.

Next, I bought more fish and buy pond pump so it will pum water to form a mushroom like fountain. It look nice and add water sound, and the fish look happy with that. Than I bought one sack medium green-color natural stone from road-side garden equipment seller and spread it on the pond, so it look better and heavy rain had cleaned up the water so it's look nice now.

By read on articles and see some video from pondmarket on you tube, I know that I should put a separate filter pond and pump pond or skimmer pond. Well, I should think about it but by the heavy rain I don't think I should have them immediately, instead, I planned to put more colored-stone on the pond base. Will think the rest later

Smart Telecom : market analysis

The question for market analyst is who will buy service from Smart Telecom, NTC or Sampoerna Telecom. If we see the offer from Smart, which the main attraction will be the price, the answer is no body. The conglomerate employee probably will be the only subscriber. For the other people, they unlikely to buy service/number from Smart. The offer from other cellular operator is a lot more attractive, cheap and advertised intensively. One more, their service has been proven and they already have millions of customer. Smart don't advertise much and their ad only seen at almost nowhere. Their advertisement itself doesn't look attractive, and most people see it sceptically. Seem that their marketing team analysis is shallow.

The key for cellular operator to survive is to sell number, or if not, sell the whole company, which is unlikely the case for Smart. There is options to choose : to sell on normal price and nobody will buy, to sell with discount as the others did which unfortunately will not attract people. Both will burden the company because of no sales occured. Other options is to give away many services, give a lot of lower cost, provide many bonuses and sell very cheap mobile handset. Marketing team should work very hard to find an interesting combination. They should work together and negotiate with mobile vendor, regulators and others operator.

Feasibility Analysis of Wimax

WIMAX stand for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access is a new technology that provide wireless broadband for fixed, portable and mobile subscribers. Its different from Wi-fi in term that it's standardized (IEEE 802.16), provide greater bandwidth (total of 75 Mbps), greater coverage (up to 50 km compared to 100m), provide QOS (that way all Wimax can support VoIP and video).

Wimax is emerged as an evolution to Wi-fi compared to as cellular phone evolution. But because of it's feature-rich, the low infrastructure and deployment cost, and the advance development on IP, soon it will be a great competitor for 3G. As stated earlier, Wimax is supporting QOS, make it possible to provide VoIP, video and data. It is reported that Motorola is developing dual mode handset supporting CDMA-Wimax, while Nokia is developing UMTS-Wimax handset, both planned to be released on 2008.

Wimax soon will be very popular to service provider and to users. For Service Provider, Wimax will provide a way to build or extend network in low cost, and enable them to deploy quickly and easily, and soon provide feature-rich service to support quadruple-play. It's service will be superior compared to 3G, and will be cheaper.

Indonesia need Wimax

Until October 2007, there is no report on deployment or trial of Wimax in Indonesia. There is deployment in Bangladesh and Pakistan, and there is trial in Japan and Malaysia. Look like there will be trial in 2008 as Motorola has prepared team for it's trial. On my opinion, infestation on Wimax is a promising. It will provide good reputation from IT community either, as it believed will increase internet broadband connectivity in the country. Even if Wimax doesn't provide voice connection in it's initial offer, provider will get a lot of subscription from broadband subscriber, as it provide lower cost subscription and convenience compared to wired or Wi-fi. It's subscriber will evolving as the result of higher internet literacy.

New Cellular Operator will Start Operating

New Operator has been operating : 3, Ceria, Smart, and soon NTS, will they success selling their number ? We should analyze that thoroughly.

At the first era of cellular era, which can be called cellular establishment era (not really initial, there was komselindo era prior to this era), there were 3 big operator : Telkomsel, Satelindo and XL, and currently they are the big three. As they have already had loyal subscriber and nation wide coverage, they enjoy their role, but still do innovation to keep their old subscriber as well as attract new subscriber. They also reduce their tariff to compete with all other operators.

Then Esia, Flexi, Star-One and Fren are started. They offer low tariff to attract new subscriber, and some offer cheap mobile phone bundled with their service, and it succeed, except Star-One which doesn't look serious to advertise it's service and in expanding it's network. Now Esia, Flexi and Fren are built Nationally and continuously expanding. I called it cheap tariff era.

As new operator were succeed in attracting subscribers and get big profit, it's attract the other enterpreneur to built their own operator brand : Ceria by Sampoerna who has a lot of money after selling it's own Cigarette company, Smart by Sinarmas which is an old conglomerate has various business in Indonesia, 3 by Hutchison from Hongkong, and NTS which owned by Saudi's company, Maxis Malaysia and Lippo.

It should be quite difficult for those four operator to attract subscribers. Good service and low tariff has been implemented by established operator, and they offer big bonus, and they are so famous. For new subscriber, most of them will buy the established service, rather that the new four. Only tiny part of them will buy their service. Beside, the new four doesn't offer something difference : low tariff (not the lowest), good service (really ?).

For most of subscriber, the decision of buying or not buying mostly will be based on the initial price of service subscription, including the mobile phone price. This is because the reluctance for persons to discard previous number. If the new operator is only offer what look similar with other operator, no body will consider it seriously.

The marketing team should work hard to find an innovative strategy, work together with mobile phone manufacturer to offer bundled service with mobile phone, or even give away a mobile phone, so people will come and buy the service. Next, they can go to established operator to get a cheap inter-connection.

The point is, it is important that the operator get as much as subscriber as they can, then they will only have to collect money from subscriber.

Telkom Replacing Motorola CDMA Networks

Motorola Networks has been replaced by Huawei Networks in North Sumatera. Started the Replacement in Aceh Province on June 2007, then North Sumatera Province on August, Now Huawei already expand the coverage and capacity by inserting several number of Bts in Medan Inner City, Outer City and add new coverage in towns previously unserved.

Some months after Medan, Batam Networks also has been replaced with Huawei.

In late September 2007, West Java Network also replaced with Huawei, but it will operate as a dual band (Motorola in West Java is using 1900MHz, Huawei 800MHz) until End of December 2007, at which it will be shutdown.

Based on information from Telkom staff (pak sitorus), there is possibility that the motorola network from west java will be transfered to east timor.

Now Motorola with Telkom are moving the Bts'es from Batam and North Sumatera to Riau Daratan and West Sumatera Province and to Southern Sumatera, including Jambi, Bengkulu and Lampung Province.

In the future, Motorola will only have CDMA networks in Southern Sumatera, as Telkom Planned to replace Motorola in Riau Daratan, West Sumatera and Lampung Province to Huawei in 2008.
